I always find it hard to make progress on a draft if I'm worried I haven't got the opening quite right – but after doing that structural work, I couldn't be happier with Part I, which now feels considerably stronger. While this means I didn't move forward, I think it was a good decision that saves me having to backtrack later. Now I have a better roadmap, I should be able to make good progress.Ģ7 April 2022: I decided to use the month I'd set aside for TBS5 to do a complete structural edit on Part I (Chapters 1-13). I now have just over a month to do as much solid drafting as I can before I get my copyedits back on my Priory-related project. Having taken the time to consider each beat of the plot, I'm really pleased with the result, and fortunately, I can still use most of what I've already written.

TBS5 has always been the most daunting stage of the series, in my mind – there were a number of directions I could have taken it after The Mask Falling, so I'm having to hold my nerve and convince myself that the path I've chosen is the right one for Paige. I can't wait to take you on Paige's next journey.ħ March 2022: I had a bit of a wobble over the synopsis last week and ended up reworking my plan for the second half of the book to make it stronger, to avoid hitting the same stumbling blocks I did with The Song Rising, which was the toughest instalment to write.

I will, of course, aim to get it to you as soon as humanly possible – I know I left you on a brutal cliffhanger. I really can't believe I'm finally drafting Book 5 - this one has felt so far away, for such a long time.Īs with The Mask Falling, I will keep you updated on my progress. Thank you, as ever, for your immense patience in waiting for each instalment of the Bone Season series.
